Last weekend, I had the privilege of photographing one of Chattanooga’s most spirited and heartfelt events: ChattaDerby 2025, the annual fundraiser for Chattanooga Room in the Inn (CRITI). Held at The Signal, this year’s event didn’t just meet expectations—it surpassed them, raising more than the anticipated goal in support of CRITI’s mission to empower women and children experiencing homelessness.
From the moment guests stepped into the venue, the energy was contagious. The Signal was buzzing with friendly faces, bold fashion, and those iconic, over-the-top Derby hats. The atmosphere was both lively and meaningful—a clear reflection of the community’s support for CRITI and the vital work they do.

A big shoutout to Adrienne, CRITI’s Director of Development, for organizing such a well-executed and engaging event. The staff at The Signal were just as welcoming and helpful, contributing to a smooth and enjoyable evening.
Let’s talk about the food—delicious and beautifully presented. It added another level of enjoyment to a night full of great moments.
From a photographer’s perspective, the event presented some technical challenges. The Signal’s lighting was dim with strong red hues, which made it tough to capture accurate colors and details straight out of camera. This is exactly why it’s important to hire a photographer who is equipped for all types of lighting conditions and has the editing skills to make necessary adjustments. I’ll be sharing a before-and-after photo from the event to highlight what goes into refining an image to truly reflect the event’s atmosphere.
Photographing ChattaDerby 2025 was a rewarding experience—not just because of the vibrant visuals, but because it told a story of generosity, style, and real community connection.
Looking forward to next year—and hats off to everyone who made this night one to remember. 🎩
