Behind the Lens: The Gear That Helps Me Capture Your Story

Updated: 4 days ago

As a photographer, having reliable, high-quality gear is essential to creating stunning images that tell your unique story. I’m often asked about the equipment I use, so I wanted to share an inside look at my go-to tools and why they matter — especially when capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments like weddings and portraits.

My Camera: The Nikon D850

At the heart of my kit is the Nikon D850, a powerhouse full-frame DSLR that delivers incredible detail and dynamic range. It enables me to shoot in Kelvin, a manual control that helps me capture consistent, true-to-life colors straight out of the camera — especially important for skin tones and natural light situations. I always shoot in RAW format to ensure I capture the maximum data from every shot — this means I have the flexibility to make precise edits without sacrificing image quality.

One feature I love is the dual card slots in the D850. This is a game-changer for wedding days or critical events because it allows me to:

  • Simultaneously save photos to two memory cards for instant backup

  • Switch cards mid-shoot without missing a beat

  • Minimize risk of losing photos due to card failure

When you’re capturing memories that can never be retaken, that extra peace of mind is invaluable.

Lenses I Rely On

I keep my lens lineup simple but powerful, focusing on versatility and sharpness:

Editing Workflow: Lightroom, Photoshop & Topaz Sharpen

Post-processing is where the magic really comes together. I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop for detailed adjustments — color correction, retouching, and fine-tuning the mood of your images. Occasionally, I enhance clarity and sharpness with Topaz Sharpen AI, which helps salvage shots that might have slight focus or motion softness, especially in fast-paced moments.

Practical Gear I Always Bring

I’m prepared for all scenarios, whether we’re outdoors, in a studio, or on location:

  • Portable Changing Tent: For clients needing privacy during outfit changes on location shoots.

  • Light Reflector: To bounce natural light perfectly and create flattering shadows.

  • Godox TT6600 Flash with Soft Covers: A reliable light source with covers that soften the light for beautiful, natural illumination.

  • Tripod: For stability during portraits or time lapses.

  • Rain Cover: To protect my gear from unexpected weather (because Mother Nature loves surprises).

  • Stool: For when I'm too short to get the right angle!

  • Organic Bug Spray: I use only the best truly organic options that work and are safe for even the most sensitive skin!

  • Bug Sucker: For emergencies, especially outdoors, I carry a small bug bite and sting relief tool to soothe any irritations quickly.

Unique Session Additions

Depending on your shoot, I may bring creative props or elements to elevate your session — like florals, fabrics, picnic set-ups, or color smoke bombs — especially for styled elopements or editorial storytelling.

Must-Have Gear for Photographers

Beyond the basics, here are some other items I consider essential for smooth sessions and happy clients:

  • Backup Batteries & Chargers: Nothing worse than running out of power mid-shoot.

  • Portable Phone Charger: You just never know!

  • Lens Cleaning Kit: To keep my lenses spotless and clear for crisp images.

  • Comfort Items: Water, snacks, and a small first aid kit — I always want to keep energy high and everyone safe.

Final Thoughts

Photography is about more than just equipment — it’s about storytelling, connection, and capturing real emotions. But having the right tools ensures I’m ready for anything and can deliver beautiful, timeless images no matter the conditions. If you have questions about my process or gear, feel free to reach out!
