Planning Your Photoshoot: How to Get Kids (and Dads 😄) Ready for a Photo Shoot

Updated: Jun 6

Tips to make planning your photoshoot feel more like fun and less like herding cats.

Let’s be real—when it comes to planning your family photo shoot, getting everyone out the door dressed and smiling can feel like an Olympic sport. And while I can’t promise zero meltdowns or snack demands, I can help make it all go a lot smoother (and even—gasp—fun).

Here are my tried-and-true tips for prepping your crew—big and small—for a relaxed, joy-filled session:

1. Prep, But Don’t Pressure

Let your kids (and your husband 😜) know what’s happening without making it feel like a big deal. Say something like,

“We’re going to hang out with Claire and take some fun photos together—she’s super nice and loves silly faces.” No pressure. Just a fun family hangout.

2. Dress for Comfort & Connection

Yes, cute outfits matter. But comfort is key—especially for littles. Choose outfits that feel good, don’t itch or twist, and that allow for movement, snuggles, and spontaneous dancing.

And pro tip: try everything on before the day of, just in case.

3. Snacks Are a Superpower

Bring some non-messy treats (think fruit snacks, granola bars, yogurt tubes) to keep energy up and moods happy. Bonus points if they’re secret and only come out as a surprise reward.

Avoid chocolate. Trust me.

4. Dads Just Wanna Know What to Expect

Most dads don’t hate photos—they just don’t know what they’re walking into. Give him a quick rundown:

“It’s not stiff posing. It’ll be fun and fast. Claire’s got it covered.” Reassure him he doesn’t need to “perform”—just be present and enjoy his people.

And if all else fails: remind him these photos are for the kids to look back on. That usually does the trick.

5. Let Go of Perfection

The best photos aren’t the perfectly posed ones—they’re the real ones. Let the kids be themselves. Let someone fall down laughing. Let Dad tickle them mid-shot.

I’ll guide you the whole way and capture the magic in between the chaos.

Bonus Tip: Have Fun With It

This isn’t a photo shoot—it’s a chance to play, cuddle, and laugh as a family. Let’s make it lighthearted and low-pressure. When you relax, everyone else follows your lead.
